IPL 2015: Mumbai Indians vs Sunrisers Hyderabad LIVE SCORE
Toss: Mumbai Indians won the toss and elected to bat first against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Six matches, one win. Two points. A net run-rate of -0.830. On Thursday evening at the Feroz Shah Kotla, Mumbai Indians went into their match against Delhi Daredevils placed seventh on the IPL 2015 points table. Defeat by 37 runs has left them at the bottom of the pile. On Saturday, in front of their home crowd at the Wankhede Stadium, they will face Sunrisers Hyderabad who have two more points from five matches. How did it come to be so bad for Mumbai Indians?
Injuries to Aaron Finch and Corey Anderson have obviously weakened the franchise, but the bottom line is that they just aren't good enough this year. They were beaten comprehensively in the tournament opener by Kolkata Knight Riders, upstaged in a high-scorer against Kings XI Punjab, unable to cope with Rajasthan Royals' cool-as-ice chasing, failed miserably to defend 183 against Chennai Super Kings, surged to 209 and kept Royal Challengers Bangalore to 191, and then fell apart against Delhi Daredevils. In each of those five defeats there are common threads - indifferent fielding, ragged bowling and some average batting, particularly from the Indian players. Against Sunrisers Hyderabad, who are coming off a win over KKR, there's not much left to say that can inspire confidence in Mumbai Indians.
David Warner's team has its own issues, chiefly a lack of firepower in the middle order. Only two batsmen have managed half-centuries so far - Warner (three) and his opening partner Shikhar Dhawan (two). The likes of KL Rahul, Naman Ojha, Kane Williamson and Ravi Bopara have not been able to convert platforms, which has left the bowlers with plenty to do. They pulled it off against KKR in a rain-hit match in Visakhapatnam, earning much praise from Warner, but you cannot expect that to happen every time.
Mumbai Indians:
The defeat in Delhi saw several shoddy performances, which again harks back to Rohit Sharma's comments earlier this week about Mumbai Indians not getting the right combination. But who to pick? With Aaron Finch and Corey Anderson ruled out with injury, the other batsman who could get a look-in for Lendl Simmons is Australian Aiden Blizzard. Rohit said on Thursday that the idea for the Delhi Daredevils match was to use the same batting order, but there could be some changes for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Young Hardik Pandya has failed to do anything in two matches and looks likely to be dropped. One of Siddhesh Lad or Akshay Wakhare could take his place. Jasprit Bumrah's repeated failures should now make room for Abhimanyu Mithun.
Sunrisers Hyderabad:
Defending a rain-revised target of 118 from 12 overs, the bowlers did the job - in particular the Kumars from Meerut and Ravi Bopara. The one potential weak link could be spinner Bipul Sharma, but it would also be harsh to judge him on a match in which he bowled one over for 14 runs. No changes expected.
Form Guide:
After losing 5 of their first 6 matches, Mumbai find themselves at the bottom of the table. Their counterparts today, Hyderabad are currently in the fifth position and they have played a game less than the Mumbai. With two wins in 5 matches, Hyderabad are tied on points with Punjab and Bangalore, but are above them because of a superior net run-rate.
Head-to-Head:
Both teams have met each other on four occasions before today's game. There's nothing to separate both the teams on this count as they have won two games each.
Stat-Attack:
There have been two century-plus partnerships scored off Mumbai Indians' bowling in IPL 2015 - 154 for the first wicket between Shreyas Iyer and JP Duminy and 109 for the first wicket between Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum. Conversely, the best partnership scored against Sunrisers Hyderabad is 78 for the second wicket by Iyer and Duminy.
The biggest losing margin in terms of runs has been to Sunrisers Hyderabad. They lost to CSK by 45 runs on April 11.
Quotes:
Mumbai Indians wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel after the loss in Delhi: "Yes, results are not going our way, but still eight games to go anyone can get on a roll and win five-six games. Our coaching staff isn't to be blamed, we have a great coaching staff."
Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner praises the job done in the last three overs by Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Praveen Kumar against KKR: "If you can deliver six yorkers in a row, then very well done. Today was very clinical. The bowlers executed everything that I asked for."
