Here is how your mobile phone can detect earthquakes

Nepal earthquake has rocked the world and at the same time has created fear among the people. Now, you can use your smartphone or a tablet to know the seismic activities. Your smart device can act as a basic seismometer to know whether the ground is really shaking or it is just you.
All what you need is a smartphone that can work as basic seismometer. You don't need to install any app. A built in web browser is enough to do the job. It can be checked on almost any smartphone these as they have inbuilt accelerometers and gyroscopes.
Launch Google Chrome or the Safari browser on your mobile phone or tablet. Open thepage. Once opened, you will find a continuously moving waveform. Keep the device on a flat surface and it will check the seismic activities. The graph will keep on capturing the movements in a real time in accordance with the movements of your device.
It depends on the orientation of your phone- if you slightly shake or tilt your mobile device the graph will vary and if you shake the phone vigorously the graph will vary more. As you move the physical hardware, the changes in the orientation of the device and acceleration are detected by the browser accordingly.
