Chevrolet Beat: Getting ready for a Spark

Looks smarter: The new Beat does away with the 'tall boy' design theme. The roof is lowered too. The headamps are larger and the signature Chevrolet grille is retained.
In India, the Chevrolet Beat has quite literally become the company's lifeline. This is more so the case ever since they launched it with a diesel motor under its hood. But over the years, the edgy design has started to look rather dated and it was about time the Beat got a proper makeover. Enter the new one which was recently unveiled at the New York Auto Show and should reach Indian shores by the end of this year. So let's find out what is this new Beat all about.
The new Beat has a sleeker and more matured appearance, thanks to a slightly longer wheelbase, and an overall height which is 40mm lower than the current model. This move take the Beat out of the realms of the proverbial 'tall boy' design. Chevrolet's signature two-tier grille is flanked by large and swept back headlamps that flow into the front fenders. In profile one can spot the smooth flowing rear door devoid of a handle and that is because Chevrolet has chosen to keep the same hidden in the top portion of the door cladding. At the back, the new Beat gets a major revamp. The tailgate is new and so are the bumpers and the tail lights. The bumper gets reflectors and also houses sensors for the reversing camera.
Sharper at the back: The rear end is all new too. The tail gate, tail lamps and rear bumper look sleeker and gel well with the overall theme.
Inside the Beat also gets a major makeover. An all-new instrument panel design with an advanced liquid crystal display (LCD) features a prominent "center stack" for the infotainment and climate system controls. The seat height has been reworked as well to allow for better headroom inspite of the lowered overall height of the hatchback. The Beat will also get  a new MyLink radio which will come with a touch color display, with an icon-based interface similar to smartphones and other electronic devices. And like a smartphone, the touch display allows swiping, pinching and other gestures for quick, easy operation.
Expect the new Beat to come in with an all new 1.4-litre petrol engine along with the 1.2-litre petrol as well. A diesel will also be offered alongside.
