Facebook adds Hindi transliteration for Android users

Fcebook has added a new Hindi transliteration feature in its Android app. The feature allows users to type in English and convert it to the Devanagari script. Basically, this means that if a user types something out in English, it will get transliterated into Hindi.
The latest version of the Facebook app brings about this feature which adds a small icon on the top right corner above the virtual keyboard on the phone.
While this may sound like a game-changing feature, the stock Google keyboard already provides for this capability.
"When people use this, we take the characters typed in English and suggests similar Devanagari characters. This new option will also remember the suggestions you use the most. We're just starting to roll this out and working to improve, but if we don't get the Devanagari characters right, there is an option to type them in yourself," says Facebook while launching the feature.
This feature has to be enabled from the app settings separately. The company claims that firstly most phones don't have multi-lingual support out of the box. Even in cases, when the user is using a third party keyboard, the app has to be switched, which isn't an ideal experience. That's why Facebook has embedded the feature within the app.
India is an important market for Facebook. India has more than 130 million users which makes it the second largest market outside of the US. Considering Facebook is banned in China, this makes India even more important. That's why the company is doubling down on India.
Last week, the company also launched a group calling feature for the Messenger app. Facebook as of now supports group calling for up to 50 participants.
