World Earth Day: 7 smart ways to save water before it's too late
It's high time we give Mother Earth the attention she needs. On World Earth Day Today, use these practical, smart ways to save water on a daily basis.
If you haven't been living under a rock (or in oblivion), you'd have received by now the signals Mother Earth has been sending its inhabitants--be it the sudden rise in the number of earthquakes or the subsequent Tsunamis or Katrinas and other natural calamities of the like.
As much as we'd like to, we can't ignore the fact that among other natural resources, water is diminishing in our country the fastest, and we, the proud urban Indians, must find ways to preserve and wisely use this natural resource.
No, this is not your Class 2 Social Studies lesson on 'turn off the tap while brushing'. This is real-life, practical advice on doing your bit to deal with the water shortage that's staring all of us in the face, before things spiral out of control--which, at the rate we're going, won't be too far ahead in the future.
1. Reuse that pasta water
How often do you cook pasta? Once or twice a week? How much water do you waste when you drain the water--after boiling the pasta--out? At twice a week, that'll be more than 5 litres. An average person's everyday consumption of water is 2.5 litres.
So, instead of throwing this down the drain, use it to maybe water your plants.
2. Use the right flush
Even though it's really common sense, if you notice your flush's push-button, you'd see a difference in sizes. The smaller one if half-flush, the big one is full-flush. So, every time you pee (and not poop), press the smaller one, please!
And if you don't have the right flush installed yet, call the plumber, NOW!
3. Low-flow shower heads
4. Flush less often
If you're one of those people who guzzle water like their life depends on it, compensate by not flushing every time you go pee-pee. Every alternate time should do it.

Those lids on the pot serve a purpose, you know.
And if you're a little too fussy, just pour a mug of water after going pee-pee, instead of flushing.
5. Rinse your mouth with a glass of water
After brushing your teeth, use a glass of water to rinse your mouth instead of using running water over the toothbrush, and then using the toothbrush to rinse your mouth.

6. Only wash a full load in your washing machine
This one's a no-brainer, really. If your washing machine offers a water-saving setting, always choose that. If not, be sure to at least do a full load every time.
7. Wash your car only once a week
